About Internet Computer

A blockchain that aims to host web applications and smart contracts at internet scale.

The Internet Computer (ICP) is a blockchain developed by DFINITY Foundation, launched in May 2021 after years of research. The ICP protocol runs "canister" smart contracts that can directly serve web content — meaning dApps can run entirely on-chain without any cloud servers. ICP uses a novel consensus called "Chain Key Cryptography" and is organized into subnets of node machines worldwide.

ICP is used to run fully on-chain dApps, NFT platforms (Entrepot), social networks (DSCVR), DeFi protocols (ICPSwap), and the OpenChat messaging app. Canisters (smart contracts) can hold large amounts of data on-chain at low cost compared to Ethereum. ICP also provides chain-key ECDSA signing, enabling canisters to sign Bitcoin and Ethereum transactions without bridges.
