Cosmos (ATOM) is a network of interoperable blockchains connected by the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol, launched in 2019 by Jae Kwon and Ethan Buchman. Each chain in the Cosmos ecosystem is built with the Cosmos SDK and runs its own validator set, while IBC lets them exchange tokens and data trustlessly. Cosmos popularized the "application-specific blockchain" (appchain) model.

ATOM is the native token of the Cosmos Hub — the central chain in the ecosystem.
