About Filecoin
A decentralized storage network that lets anyone rent spare hard drive space.
Filecoin (FIL) is a decentralized file storage protocol built on top of IPFS (InterPlanetary File System), launched in 2020 by Protocol Labs. Storage providers (miners) offer disk space and earn FIL tokens when clients pay to store files. Proofs of storage (PoRep and PoSt) cryptographically verify that providers are actually storing the data they claim. Filecoin is designed to be an alternative to centralized cloud storage like AWS S3 or Google Cloud.
Filecoin is used to store large datasets, archive data, and power decentralized applications. Key clients include the Internet Archive, large NFT metadata collections, and Web3 projects seeking censorship-resistant storage. The Filecoin Virtual Machine (FVM) added smart contract capability to the network in 2023, enabling DeFi applications on top of storage infrastructure.
